By MALCOLM RITTER,AP Science Writer AP - Thursday, October 23 NEW YORK - Just two weeks after a Nobel Prize highlighted theoretical work on subatomic particles, physicists are announcing a startling discovery about a much more familiar form of matter: Scotch tape. It turns out that if you peel the popular adhesive tape off its roll in a vacuum chamber, it emits X-rays. The researchers even made an X-ray image of one of their fingers.
Who knew? Actually, more than 50 years ago, some Russian scientists reported evidence of X-rays from peeling sticky tape off glass. But the new work demonstrates that you can get a lot of X-rays, a study co-author says. "We were very surprised," said Juan Escobar. "The power you could get from just peeling tape was enormous." Escobar, a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, reports the work with UCLA colleagues in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. He suggests that with some refinements, the process might be harnessed for making inexpensive X-ray machines for paramedics or for places where electricity is expensive or hard to get. After all, you could peel tape or do something similar in such machines with just human power, like cranking. The researchers and UCLA have applied for a patent covering such devices. In the new work, a machine peeled ordinary Scotch tape off a roll in a vacuum chamber at about 1.2 inches per second. Rapid pulses of X-rays, each about a billionth of a second long, emerged from very close to where the tape was coming off the roll. That's where electrons jumped from the roll to the sticky underside of the tape that was being pulled away, a journey of about two-thousandths of an inch, Escobar said. When those electrons struck the sticky side they slowed down, and that slowing made them emit X-rays. So is this a health hazard for unsuspecting tape-peelers? Escobar noted that no X-rays are produced in the presence of air. You need to work in a vacuum _ not exactly an everyday situation. "If you're going to peel tape in a vacuum, you should be extra careful," he said. But "I will continue to use Scotch tape during my daily life, and I think it's safe to do it in your office. No guarantees." James Hevezi, who chairs the American College of Radiology's Commission on Medical Physics, said the notion of developing an X-ray machine from the new finding was "a very interesting idea, and I think it should be carried further in research." ___ On the Net: Nature: http://www.nature.com/nature
i realise that my tag board cannot be seen, am i right? this is because i just realise that i receive comment too! hm... how should i start going about this?
LoVexinxin ! &&& sryXINXin . sry for letting you to wait for me for soooo long ( pardon me , too shy to say the timing) in an unknown place. =(
morning : daddy drive dajie and i to her hostel. later we have our lunch and watch a movie: super hero.. kinda of lame. the story mimic after superman returns. its about a guy who has special power and his process of wining his gal and deficit his enemy . the part where its lame is because there is a sch for these special people for learn to control their special power. In the sch , we have the invisible girl, having an affair with the principal and the wife was confronting her. in the end the real culprit is her dog? overall stupid and lame.
later part of the day i went to AMK hub to meet lixin and i was very late. After completed our mission at amk we headed to her house. this is the first time i visit her house . Finally saw her baby... she is kinda over welcoming. she is the first dog keep pawing on me and kicking my hands..i would say its very tickling!!! i really scared of tickles...
today dad gave me 50 bucks to buy 3controler for the fan, it is not available.hence , the money end up in buying ***
i look forward on tue'sbbq at Leslie's house. i must remind myself to get the vegetarian sausage and satay!!! oh any onepls remind me! heard that the sausages are nice.
as the title mention went ECP with sis and bro. we went the long way! sign! yeah , we travel to Pasir Ris and took a bus there. we actually should alight at kalang or eunos..=( look at the photo , my bro feels very sian.... ZZZZ... i bought some breads, quite nice!
this little pie? bread? erm i don't know what this call. is nice. creamy and cheeze! the only flaw it has is too sweet. But for the sweet lovers the taste would be just right.

Life is a stage and we are all actors playing our parts. We have our entrances and our exits. The story has all the taste of life.Regardless it is sweet
bitter or sour, we should not try to avoid it. Despite the fact that we may step back due to fear, since a storm is anticipated, let it be a heavest storm in the century
